Today the site of the Musée de l’Armée (a military museum), the Hotel National des Invalides was commissioned by Louis XIV to house soldiers who were disabled or elderly. At the end of the 17th century the hotel housed 4,000 residents. Approximately 100 severely injured soldiers were cared for at the Hospital, which remains active to this day. Construction of the Eglise du Dôme was entrusted to Jules Hardouin-Mansart.

A masterpiece of classical French architecture, the interior decoration was created by the greatest artists of the period. The dome was regilded for the bicentennial of the French Revolution in 1989, the fifth time this was done since its creation. The church houses the tomb of Emperor Napoleon I. The Musée de l’Armée was founded in 1905,

with exhibits that include prestigious collections of ancient arms and armour and an exceptional group of items related to Napoleon I and the Empire’s field marshal. It is one of the world’s great museums of military art and history, covering a broad historical period and presenting a wide range of works.
